There is a Khmer proverb, "Tvoeur Sre Neung Toeuk, Tvoeur Seuk neung Bai"... it means: We need water to farm rice, and we need rice to fight the enemy.
Rice or Bai in Khmer do not necessarily mean just grains of rice but what it represents the strength of economic power. The recent showing of force between Thailand and Cambodia make many people wonder how Cambodia will fight against the almighty Thailand.
Thailand is a good student and friend of the United States. The U.S always believes in the “peace through strength” policy. President Ronald Reagan used this slogan effectively during his political campaign challenging President Jimmy Carter.
What can Cambodia do to become economically and militarily self-reliant, independent and be on its own feet without having to count on other country(ies) to defend it?
Historically speaking Cambodia had lost much of its territory to her neighboring countries for this same reason. Will Cambodia’s neighboring countries allow Cambodia to become self-reliant so that Cambodia can make peace through strength? Will Cambodian people allow the outsiders to divide and conquer us? Or must we unite to become strong in order to make peace?
