On Cambodian Intertainment Industry

Hun Sen was not pleased with the production of movies and television shows that he said were not in keeping with national cultural traditions.By watching Cambodian television shows and other productions made by Cambodians nowadays, I agree with most of Premier Hun Sens statements.

More should be done to help Cambodian entertainment industry to compete, be professional as well as to be accountable for social problems arising from their creations. Something must be done from here on to make sure that all productions including short TV commercials are rated properly. It appears that there are no ratings being enforced in Cambodia. Graphic pictures in Cambodian newspapers, for example, are very explicit and disturbing. Verbal communications spoken in movies, especially in comedy shows are really awful indeed.

Cambodian monks and achar need to be trained well so that they too can do their job professionally to appropriately serve Cambodian community which are mostly depended on them. Overseas Cambodians, too, have been struggling to get monks and achars to help perform different kinds of traditional and cultural ceremony. Standardized publications should be published and available to help guide these people to become experts in this crucial occupation.

On political front, it appears that Hun Sen has captured the heart and soul of Cambodian performers. Many of these performers belong to the CPP. The oppositions are being mocked on regular basis. Those who dare to oppose the CPP seem to face themselves with fewer audiences, leaving the country or in some cases being killed. As everything in Cambodia evolves around politics, politicians will always look into effective outlets to mobilize supports. Those who have control over entertainment industry and the media will always have the upper hand.
